Underestimate Barack Obama?

Looks line one mistake Hillary Clinton did.

Ted Kennedy once introduced him as "Barack Osama."  May God bless his soul, he is no longer with us.

So when our president receives the coveted Nobel Peace Prize, on December 10, 2009, in Oslo, the tendency will be for us Americans to belittle the honor or question what he has done to deserve it.

Go on the Internet and read reactions in London, or Rome, or Tokyo, or Beijing.

I think we Americans will underestimate Barack Obama a little less and be a little more proud.

The Good:

Obama described starting the war in Iraq to driving a bus into a ditch, during the presidential campaign.

The Bad:

John Nagle, General David Petraeus' advisor, calls the war in Afghanistan "a better war."

The Ugly:

If we Americans are committed to remain in Afghanistan for the next 20 years, we need to add more troops.

CREATing AWARENESS. Awareness depends upon your ability to CREATE and communicate a specific image.

Yes, step right up, greenies in the green revolution we're having today, everybody gets to play, everybody's a winner, nobody gets hurt, and nobody has to do anything hard.

That's not a revolution.

That's a PARTY !!!

I'm starting to believe that there can be too much "greenwashing" / publicity, when it comes to global warming...

What would you like to see more of?

Posted on Oct 23rd, 2009 by Lou : The Backseat Driver Lou
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for October 23, 2009:

Chakra_creativity_is_centered_in_the_female_reproductive_organs

More CREATIVITY.

"CREATIVITY is centered in the female reproductive organs.  When all the chakras are OPEN, body and mind are healthy."

My CREATIVITY pulled me out of a repressed, boring, and otherwise uneventful childhood, and gave my life meaning and shape.

CREATIVE people get away with bad behavior, of course---and are not much questioned by society, and in any case, have entertainment value.

Although, I know I have plenty of personal failings, my mental state is competent and capable.

I've always known that I was CREATIVE and could do CREATIVE work.

I have never taken antidepressants because I couldn't face the flatness of life in that state.

I'd rather have my own suffering than someone else's solution.

Who wants to be wounded.  Then again, being wounded brings unexpected gains.

We know from 100 years of psychological research that an early trauma in life, often buried, or unavailable to consciousness, is always present through our lives.

We meet it again and again under different disguises.

We are wounded again in the same place.  But this doesn't turn us into victims.

Rather, we are always going to be people in search of a transformation of the real.

CREATIVITY takes the heavy load called "life" and transforms it back into available ENERGY.

We see through our own "fakes", our own stories.

We see our stories as things as they are, instead of how they look, or how we'd like them to be.

The capacity to write our own stories or blogging as we know it today, or in short the CREATIVE capacity to do this is extraordinary!

Think of blogging as pulling our best work out of our broken conditions.

"Make it new" or making our lives new, is nothing new for its own sake.

We live in a world always after the next new thing.

That is the boredom and restlessness of a consumer society that thinks 31 flavors of ice-cream or 50 kinds of  laundry detergent, or 21 kinds of peanut butter is choice.

"New" and "improved" are often marketing tricks---not transformations of the real.

Too often, we are sold transformation of the unreal.

The get rich/thin/happy programs are no different than upgrading the car/house/wife/boyfriend that confuses what's real from the unreal.

When life loses all meaning, we cannot live.

Every piece of CREATIVE work...

...can you say GAIA.com...

...is an attempt to bring into being a loss.

Writing, pictures, music, poems, blogs, and performances of all sorts are an engagement with loss.

While one is in the act of CREATING, one is not in loss, and one has meaning.

The strange thing about CREATIVE work is that it can have a huge value for others while its maker is left ravaged.

But I do not believe that CREATIVITY is destructive.

I believe it is the part of us that gives shape and voice to our innermost reality.

Hurray for Gaia.com!

But, this is frightening.

Encounters with the real, in particular what we really feel, are something we generally try to avoid.

CREATIVE work allows us to get nearer to our longing and our loss, to risk more, and to dare more.

So be CREATIVE Gaians...

...be creative!

How do you define power?

Posted on Oct 25th, 2009 by Lou : The Backseat Driver Lou
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for October 24, 2009:

It-s_ok_to_text_while_having_sex
Power is sex.  Female sexuality is formidable POWER. Women who know how to use it can have men at their mercy; those who don't tend to be vulnerable.

Taoists do not shy away from sex, they transform its force into spiritual energy. Sex then becomes power in, the spiritual pursuit of enlightenment.

Sexual energy - like fire - is neither good nor bad in itself. It depends on how it's used.

For example, texting while having sex.

Traditional mores say that texting when you're with someone is rude.

But is it really?

Just look at today's young people---tomorrow's decision makers.

For them, texting or SMSing one person while hanging out with another is normal and expected; it may be even an inclusive gesture.

Many draw no distinction between socializing in person or by cell, and they see no reason to favor one over the other.

But here lies the great technological divide.

Teenagers rarely offer a model of etiquette.

Then again, tomorrow's arbitrator of behavior, may be already here, among us.

Twitter followers are "checking in" at a bar, restaurant or shop, and send a "shout" to other Twittees.

Users of Twitter rack-up "points" for check-ins, earning various badges of honor which signify coolness...

...on their way to the top of responsibility and adulthood.

Twitter is without a doubt the best way to share and discover what is happening right now.

So here's a rule of thumb for those of us playing catch-up:  Feel free to text while talking or dining or having sex---but only if you're trying to include someone who isn't there.

Spread the joy around the world... even if it's slippery and wet.

But if your motive is to shut out the person you're with, you already know the answer.

To sum it all up:  in today's stressful world, women need to respect their sexuality more than ever. They neither have to run after, nor away from men.

Power struggles with men are unnecessary.

Sexual Union is easy:  The longing for wholeness---the return of oneness---which manifests itself as male-female attraction, man's need for a woman, and woman's need for a man.

The root of this physical urge is a spiritual one:  the longing for an end to duality, a return to the state of wholeness.

Sexual union is the most deeply satisfying experience in the physical realm.

What would you most like to teach?

Posted on Oct 27th, 2009 by Lou : The Backseat Driver Lou
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for October 27, 2009:

Fact_without_theory_is_bullshit------theory_without_fact_is_trivia

I want to teach the "CRAPification" of everything a.k.a. the "Good Enough" lifestyle.

Cheap, fast, simple ways of living.

We get our breaking news from blogs, we make spotty long-distance calls on Skype, we watch video on small computer screens rather than TVs, and more and more of us are carrying around dinky, low-powered netbook computers that are just "Good Enough" to meet our surfing and emailing needs.

What can I say Gaians?   The low end has never been riding higher.

music79

When jazz burst out of the brothels of New Orleans in the 1920s and into the speakeasies of Chicago and New York, most Americans said it was a savage form of music that corrupted the values of society.

So what happened?

Well, in short, "Technology" happened.

The world has sped up, become more connected and a whole lot busier.  As a result, what people want from the products and services they buy is fundamentally changing.

We now favor flexibility over high fidelity, convenience over features, quick and dirty over slow and polished.  Having here and now is more important than having it perfect.

These changes run so deep and wide, they're actually altering what we mean when we describe a product or service as "high-quality."

And it's happening everywhere, as more sectors connect to the digital world, from medicine to the military, they too are seeing the rise of "Good Enough" tools like this message I'm sending you Gaians.

Suddenly, what seemed perfect is anything but, and products and services that appear mediocre at first glance are often the perfect fit.

As the worst recession in 75 years rolls on Gaians, it's the light and nimble products and services that are having an impact.

To some it looks like the CRAPIFICATION of everything.  But it's really an improvement.

And Gaians need to get used to it, because the "Good Enough" revolution has only begun.

What weather are you today?

Posted on Oct 28th, 2009 by Lou : The Backseat Driver Lou
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for October 28, 2009:

Theproposal_poster_it_takes_2_to_make_a_thing_go_right
Like the weather, advice from your friends, some of it is good, some of it is bad, for it's always good weather, IT TAKES 2 TO MAKE A THING GO RIGHT.

Inside of everyone of us is a unique spirit that belongs only to us.

This spirit doesn't bring home wages or take care of anybody, and it's completely free to want fantastic things---to run the four-minute mile, or to be a mystic.

This spirit has been shut up in a soundproof box for many years.

Most of us get caught up in a kind of bening servitude when our kids are little, when, for years, we hardly have time to look at a magazine.

Even when our kids grow up and their real demands have ended, we don't always remember how to stop serving or how to fill the new time we've been given.  We lose track of the years until one day something happens that jolts our sense of sameness and wakes us up to the realization that we've been drifting:  a friend dies unexpectedly, our first kid goes off to college and we realize we were working so hard we forgot to be around while she was growing up, or we just realize that we've reached the pinnacle of our career and there's nowhere else to go.

That's when the free spirit in you gets loose and starts saying,

"Didn't you know there were 2 of us? ...There's me.  And there's me!"

Do you consider yourself fortunate?

Posted on Oct 29th, 2009 by Lou : The Backseat Driver Lou
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for October 29, 2009:

The-princess-and-the-frog-----americas-s_first_african-american_princess

I consider myself a fortunate man to have a forum like Gaia for my curiosity.

A blogger on Gaia is basically a chronicler, not an interpreter of events.

Where else can you delve into the life of our times?

Consider the less fortunate "FROG PRINCESS."

Disney's upcoming movie "The Princess and The Frog."

Move over Snow White.  Make room for Disney's first black princess.  With America's first African-American President in the White House, Disney is counting on an African-American princess to be a big hit in Hollywood.

In this movie, a frog prince desperately wants to be human again, and a fateful kiss from our new African-American princess, turns both prince and princess into frogs.

Will they be FORTUNATE

This film will open December 11, 2009 in the U.S.

If you had to found a museum, what would it be about?

Posted on Oct 30th, 2009 by Lou : The Backseat Driver Lou
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for October 30, 2009:

Portable_museum
A portable museum.  And why not?

It might be a better solution than what we have today, when museums struggle to find a strategy to fit into a community.

So is strategy dead?

Just live the strategy and ditch the 5-year plan.

Right now, the world is unpredictable.  The economic outlook is uncertain.  The world has changed.

If old-style strategy is not exactly dead, then it is hardly in the best of health.

The assumption that ALL MUSEUMs are tied to their present location is worth questioning.

GRAND-VISIONS have been filed away in some drawer or forgotten or rolled-up into a ball, until things are less scary, but that does little to prepare us for the future.

So process relevant data "signals"---can you say Gaia.com--- quickly and react to them.

VISION---is more about free flowing like this blog I'm writing today.

I'd like "future thinking" MUSEUMS and museum organizations to "live the strategize" (as opposed to just philosophize) on how to listen to "museum fans" rather than just "museum visitors." Because in that regard, sports teams have left museums far, far behind.

Portable Museum anyone?
